Coron is a relatively recent discovery as a beautiful tourist spot. It is located in the northern part of Palawan, being a part of the Calamianes Islands composed of four municipalities—Coron, Busuanga, Culion and Linapacan. Coron is located in Busuanga Island, being one of two municipalities therein and is the center of commerce and trade in the Calamianes.
Coron Island or Calis Island, as the Tagbanuas call it, is a big island across the bay just 20 minutes by motorboat from Coron town. It is in island composed of towering limestone cliffs, coves, lakes, pockets of white beaches — all beautiful aspects one could think of of an island. The rock walls are undercut by waves and been exquisitely carved by wind and sea into sculpted forms and formations. It is a wonder to behold and is a photographer’s delight.
Small islands and the surrounding clear waters are great tourist attractions. Snorkeling is exciting at the Siete Pecados and the Coral Gardens, where one beholds an undersea garden of multicolored corals, anemones, fishes. The Japanese shipwreck at Lusong is a must, having been beautifully encrusted with corals and with colorful fishes darting in and out of the corals and the wreck. This is a favorite of scuba divers, and so are the 10 other World War II shipwrecks in the area.
Coron is a safe place and one could walk around without fear. People are friendly and helpful.
There are mobile phone signals for Smart and Globe phones. The town has one bank which has an ATM outlet. The main means of land transportation is the motorized tricycles, but one could easily rent a van for out of town trips. Motorized bancas can be rented and are mostly docked at the wharf of the marketplace.
